BRUGES WITH KIDS · AT A GLANCE
- For curious minds: Choco-Story, the Frietmuseum and Historium.
- For active children: Minnewaterpark, the church swing or an indoor play centre.
- For a rainy afternoon: Brugs Brickhouse or LAGO Brugge Olympia.
- Plan ahead: some activities are outside the centre or have seasonal opening hours.
What to do with children in Bruges
Our advice is to mix a story, a treat and somewhere to move. Bruges is compact enough to explore on foot, but children will enjoy the day more when they can switch between museums, streets and green space. From Hotel Malleberg on Hoogstraat, the Burg and Market Square are close by. Start here, then choose just one or two bigger activities.
1. Choco-Story: discover Belgian chocolate
At Choco-Story, follow cocoa from its origins to the chocolate we know today. Tastings help make this a good choice for a family that enjoys hands-on discoveries. Allow roughly 90 minutes and check the age suitability and current ticket options before visiting.
2. Frietmuseum: a Belgian favourite
The Frietmuseum tells the story of potatoes and Belgian fries. It is a fun contrast to the medieval streets and works well on a rainy day. The museum advertises an average visit of about one hour. Tip: check its combined ticket with Choco-Story if you plan to visit both.
3. Historium: step into medieval Bruges
Right on the Market Square, Historium brings medieval Bruges to life through an immersive experience. Choose the format that fits your children's ages and comfort with sound, darkness or virtual reality. Ideal after seeing the Belfry: children can connect the real square with stories from the past.
4. Minnewaterpark: space to stretch your legs
After indoor attractions, walk towards Minnewaterpark and the Beguinage neighbourhood. There is greenery, water and more room for a relaxed family break. It is a place to stroll and let children burn off energy while respecting the paths, lawns and other visitors. Take a snack and give everyone time to pause.
5. Magdalenakerk: yes, a swing inside a church
The St Magdalene's Church (Magdalenakerk) is an unusual stop. This active community space is known for a high indoor swing and interactive installations. It is more than a traditional church visit. Check opening hours and whether the swing is available before promising children a turn.
6. Brugs Brickhouse: for LEGO fans
Brugs Brickhouse at Smedenstraat 23 is a specialist LEGO shop rather than an amusement park. The large LEGO model of the Belfry is a good reason to pop in, especially after seeing the real tower. This is a shorter stop to combine with a walk or shopping.
When the weather changes: bigger activities
7. De Toverplaneet: indoor climbing and play
De Toverplaneet has slides, climbing structures, ball pools and a separate area for very young children. It is at Legeweg 88 in Sint-Andries, outside the historic centre, so plan transport. Opening hours vary by school period and season; check the official timetable, especially on weekdays.
8. LAGO Brugge Olympia: swimming and slides
For children who love water, LAGO Brugge Olympia is a family swimming complex at Doornstraat 110. It is not in the old centre, so allow time for the journey and for changing. Check the latest session availability and swimming rules on the official site.
9. Boudewijn Seapark: a larger half-day outing
Boudewijn Seapark is another option in Sint-Michiels, with an outdoor park and indoor activities depending on the date. It takes more time than a city-centre museum. Check the seasonal calendar before planning your day, because not all parts operate every day.
Our suggested family day from Hotel Malleberg
- Morning: breakfast, Burg and Market Square, followed by Historium or one food museum.
- Lunch: take your time rather than planning another fixed entrance.
- Afternoon: choose Minnewaterpark and Magdalenakerk, or an indoor activity if the weather turns.
- Evening: return to the hotel for a break, then enjoy a relaxed dinner in the centre.
